Black walnut is a hardwood that is durable and full of character.
I’ve enjoyed playing guitars for many years. My pipe dream was always to someday learn how to build them.
Working for many years in the media industry didn’t allow me a lot of free time to play, let alone take guitar building courses and actually build them.
However, when we were living in the Philly area a few years back, my wife found a program that had the option to learn luthier skills at night and on the weekend and she signed me up. It was close to the Martin Guitar factory.
I went to a number of semesters and built two acoustics and one electric and I became passionate about making more on my own.
We had a lot of black walnut trees on our property and ironically, one big tree fell in our front yard. I kept some of the wood from the bottom of the tree and was able to get five bodies out of it and made electric guitars for me, my two brothers, my son-in-law and a great friend.
Now it’s in my blood. We moved to Scottsdale and I started a business, Upper Mountain Guitars. If you’re interested in a guitar, I’m selling them for $1,300 each. I’d also be happy to do custom builds.
Here’s my contact info.
